Disable Windows Licensing Monitoring Service

Posted on

Hi, From the problem description, I understand that you would like to disable the WLMS (Windows License Monitoring Service). As we know, The existence of the Windows License Monitoring Service as one of the services on Windows Server 2008 R2 machines means that this is Evaluation Media.

The Windows Licensing Monitoring Service ( WLMS) only exists on the evaluation version of Windows Server 2008 R2. If you have already activated Windows, follow one of these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, and then type winver. If you are running the evaluation version, the About Windows dialog box displays 'Evaluation version.'

Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties. If you are running the evaluation version, the system properties windows includes the following: Your Windows license is valid for XXX days Although you have activated your server, it is unsupported to upgrade to a full version or to change the product key to a full version. To upgrade to a full version, you must use non-evaluation media to do a new install.

If you change the product key to Full Version the visual evaluation references in Winver and in displayed in Slmgr /DLV output are removed, however, the WLMS service is still on the system and this is still evaluation media. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. Hello, This service is only on the Evaluation media, it is not available as an add-on and is not present in any other media. The only way this service gets on the OS is during setup. This installation was done with Evaluation media, there is no workaround, there is not way to remove the service. It appears Eval media was used, the OEM key was installed at a later point in time. Thanks, Darrell Gorter MSFT This posting is provided 'AS IS' with no warranties, and confers no rights. Hello, Nope that service only ships on Eval media, it does not ship with any other media or through any updates. Check the application event log to look for this service as well as the Security-SPP services, there may be some history about the activation and service notifications that may supply more information. We had the same situation with our Volume License media. The winver shows Windows 2008 R2 Standard with no indication of it being an Evaluation Copy.

Although we are assessing the situation and may rebuild the servers in question, here is what I did to disable the service since it was causing errors in our SCOM environment: 1 Run regedit using elevated privileges. 2 Navigate to HKLM SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Services WLMS. 3 Right click on WLMS and select Permissions. 4 Click Advanced button and select Owner Tab. 5 Change owner to Administrators, click Replace owner. And press Apply.

6 Click OK and on the Security tab, make sure that Administrators have Full Control. 7 Change the Start value for the WLMS service to 4.

We have a very controlled environment when it comes to server builds and are investigating why a few of the servers started showing this problem a few weeks ago.
